For years, DeFi operated as a closed loop — crypto capital earning yield on crypto assets. The limitation was obvious: the total addressable market was capped by the size of the crypto economy itself. Real World Assets (RWA) tokenization changes that by bringing traditional financial assets onto public blockchains.
Tokenized US Treasuries, corporate bonds, real estate, private credit, and commodities are increasingly finding a home on Ethereum, Polygon, and other networks. The result is a bridge between the $100T+ traditional financial system and the composable infrastructure of DeFi.
Why Tokenize Real World Assets?
Tokenization creates genuine efficiency gains. Settlement times compress from days to minutes. Fractional ownership becomes trivially achievable — a $10M commercial property can be divided into 10 million $1 tokens. Secondary liquidity, historically non-existent for private assets like real estate or private credit, can be programmed directly into token structures.
For DeFi protocols, RWAs offer something the ecosystem has long needed: sustainable, non-inflationary yield. During low-rate environments, DeFi relied on token emissions to generate returns. RWA-backed yields tied to real Treasury rates or private credit spreads offer more durable income streams.
Key Protocols and Approaches
Protocols like Ondo Finance, Maple Finance, and Centrifuge have pioneered different approaches to RWA integration. Ondo focuses on tokenized Treasuries and money market funds, providing on-chain access to US government yield. Maple facilitates undercollateralized institutional lending. Centrifuge connects real-world loan originators with DeFi liquidity pools.
The regulatory complexity of RWAs is significant — tokenized securities must comply with KYC/AML requirements, and cross-border distribution raises jurisdictional questions. But the direction of travel is clear: the distinction between "DeFi" and "TradFi" will become increasingly blurred as more of the financial system migrates onto programmable rails.
